NEW - Just in time for the holidays.
COTTON BATTING ORNAMENTS
Shown here are two Christmas Children 5" tall. These are made with simple heads (will also be available separately), and all cotton batting bodies (have pipe cleaner base bodies) and clothing. No sewing, only cut the expertly designed patterns, glue a few seams together, glue on trims and optionally glue to included bases or apply hang loops. These are just the first two. Later will be Santas, angels, snowmen, and more figures and animals too. Complete kits with trimmings and accessories will be available or purchase the patterns and molded heads and supply your own dyed batting (dye with Rit with instructions in patterns - easy).
Note: It is recommended in the kit to have a package of 5 Tiny Dollmaking Clamps (See Supplies page for more info) $4.50 Add

SHEEP PULLTOY
Sheep is modeled after my extensive collection of antique sheep like him. I was inspired long ago to collect these because our little historic town library has a huge and wonderful similar collection on display in honor of Acworth, NH, being a real sheep town having produced more wool for Civil War uniforms than any other single place. Until very recently, there could always be seen several hundred sheep grazing around town. I always had about 4-6 of my own. The little pulltoy has a molded body, tiny metal wheels, a bell and the rest is precut wood parts that assemble easily. All materials are included in the kit with extra parts available for those liking to add this little guy to their dolls or Santas as accessories.
Please note that due to high demand, your order for these items may not make a holiday deadline.

HOMESPUN MAGAZINE DOLL - LOTTIE
In 2009, I did a pattern for a new cloth doll for an Australian magazine (also sold in the US) called Homespun. We also sold the magazine until our supplies ran out but now the full kit or just the pattern are available. The doll is named Lottie and is 10", all cloth with embroidered face and a mohair wig. This doll has one of my best patterns yet for a cloth doll body and reverts from a painted detail face to stitchery.

MY PAPER DOLL SERIES
#1 Fashion Doll Paper Doll
These are the first in a series of tiny paper dolls. This one is my Fashion Doll and is 2-1/2" in her wooden stand. The dolls and clothing have fronts and backs and the dolls themselves are laminated onto wooden backings cut exactly to their shapes. Tiny envelopes come with them to hold their three outfits and accessories plus there is a tiny box to hold all. Although meant to be display items with the clothing left uncut, outfits will fit if cut out. Instructions included and kit has all supplies.
Large versions (shown in front) were originally made just for "advertising" and displayed so the details of the tiny paperdolls could be seen better. Naturally, everyone wants this size too, just for display. You can order the larger 6-1/2" size for your own display. Paper dolls (each doll has both front and back) are wallpapered onto wooden forms with wooden bases.

This doll is Louisa and this is her story . . .
“It is 1858 and I have just received my first
store-bought doll.”
The new plaid has been found and it is a nice brown - a more fitting tiny scale in a very fine drapable fabric.

|
MY NEW DOLL - My entire career of 35 years began with a small 8" doll hand press molded in primitive molds I made before I knew anything about dolls or moldmaking. I made thousands of these dolls and stopped forever their production in about 1995 with the idea that someday I would make another doll like them but in molded papier mache. This doll is the first of these dolls.
The theme of this first edtion is sort of snap shots in history. Every edition will be extremely limited - this one in this fabric is limited to 10. All signed and numbered with story tags. Dolls have such details as hand crocheted lace and snoods, real leather shoes and perfectly tailored outfits and accessories. They represent all that I have learned in my 35 years of dollmaking.
Louisa - A 9” papier mache doll with her new Greiner doll, a papier mache doll made in this time period by German immigrant, Ludwig Greiner. These were some of the first American made dolls available commercially. Small Greiner has papier mache head and shoulderplate on a tiny painted cloth body with red stockings and even thumbs on her tiny leather-like hands. Louisa has English mohair wig with hand crocheted snood, hand crocheted lace color and other laces, high buttoned leather shoes, silk stockings and her chair has a split ash seat.
Limited Edition Set (two dolls and chair) $595. (If you order this doll, a 20% deposit will be charged with balance due at shipping).
NOTE: The brown plaid on the doll pictured sold out faster than anticipated in the first edition of 10 dolls. After a long search, I finally found the perfect replacement. Same browns but in a smaller plaid on a nice drapable fabric perfect for this small doll. If you would like to be on an approval waiting list, click this link below and you will get one of the remaining dolls in this edition of 24 of Louisa. LOUISA IS NOW SOLD OUT.
Watch for more editions of limited edition Louisa-style dolls in 2012.

The Masters Doll (shown at left in pink)
This doll was made for a show of the work of the master craftsmen who are jurors for the League of NH Craftsmen to commemorate their new headquarters. The entries were supposed to be representative of our best work over the years. I chose to do a larger version of my Louisa Doll (she was 9" tall standing) which is 12" standing, who is a doll of a child in the late 1800's. Like Louisa in every way except for size and color scheme, she has papier mache molded parts, a mohair wig with a hand crocheted snood of silk thread, hand crocheted laces (on both dolls) and her tiny collar. She wears leather high button shoes, has her own Greiner doll, a papier mache doll made in this time period by German immigrant, Ludwig Greiner. These were some of the first American made dolls available commercially. Small Greiner has papier mache head and shoulderplate on a tiny painted cloth body with red stockings and even thumbs on her tiny leather-like hands. Both are sitting in my ladderback chair made for her with a split ash woven seat. A limited edition of 12. $750. THIS EDITION IS SOLD OUT. |

Every year I add a doll to my collection of dolls in ornament size. This is #8 of the series and I chose her because I have been researching and studying Izannahs since early this year with the ultimate goal of producing these most beloved of American cloth dolls in the same manner as Izannah Walker did in the late 1800's by molding cloth in metal molds. I have been priviledged to be able to study actual vintage dolls so as to get the sculpting and painting just right. This very small homage to this incredible dollmaker has a papier mache head on her painted cloth body with a period outfit and handmade lace.
Please note that there is a very long list of orders for this doll.
If you order her you will only be charged a deposit of $15 until your order can be filled. Dolls may be ordered with or without ornament hanging loop. $135

THE LADIES HOME
SEWING COMPANION - A PINCUSHION DOLL
A doll sewing caddy/pincushion taken from antique ones (the concept),
a cookie cutter woman I love from an antique collection (the outline)
and antique paper doll styles of the late 1800's (the underwear look).
Body outlines, hair and face designs are silkscreened on to body fabric,
but you can use the paper patterns included to make more dolls. There
is not much machine work as most of the doll is finished by hand. Her
arms will be drawn and sewn from the arm pattern and her skirt is stuffed
to become part of her whole figure. The apron, which has a pocket for
small scissors, and her bodice are appliqued on. The needle keeper (shaped
like an old-fashioned pocket once worn around the waists to hold various
everyday sundries, especially sewing tools); and the strawberry emery
hang from her waist. Her broad hips become the pincushion. All of her
features and hair are simple and relaxing embroidery. Under everything
are wood forms to define her shape and give her standing presence. Her
oval wooden base has two spool spindles fitted out with old-style wooden
spools which you wind with thread for display or you can use the spindles
for your own actual sewing threads. If you wish to make more and do not
have or wish to purchase the additional wooden parts or silkscreened
bodies, you can use the included patterns to make your own. She is intended
to be solidly stuffed with wool (the best pincushion stuffing), but you
can use wool for upper parts down to below hips and other stuffing for
lower skirt.

IZANNAH WALKER KIT OR PATTERN (13" Doll) - Unlike my other folk
style Izannahs whose heads are sewn and stuffed stockinette, I wanted
a doll body whose head would provide a canvas for a portrait style
painting of her beloved face with corkscrew curls and downcast eyes.
For this I wanted flat weave cloth for the whole doll and a separate
shoulderplate. This doll is taken from an actual historical example
wearing just this same outfit. The period dress with cotton battenburg
trim and the printed apron are all part of the kitted supplies. The
pattern by itself has instructions for making an apron from other fabric
or a pre-printed apron can be ordered below. This is the best pattern
I have ever presented. The shape is wonderful and has been long and
hard in the making. I am working on (still) a molded cloth face Izannah,
but I wanted one that had the charm of simple painting that could be
achieved without complicated molds.

PRINTED DOLL APRONS - There is something so dear about doll aprons,
bonnets and shoes. These are aprons popular in the late 1800's which
show up on many antique dolls, notably, Izannah Walkers, Springfield
Woodens and many others. This is a common design - there were many
- that I adapted and now print out in brown on extra fine overdyed
batiste (for drape). These are mini-kits to make your own with sewing
template, instructions, pre-printed and pre-overdyed (antique white)
apron fronts plus lining and button for waistband. Even Hitty has one
her size. Lengths are given so you can better gauge the size your doll

12" CLOTH FASHION DOLL KIT OR PATTERN
This is a long awaited
painted cloth doll in one of my favorite pattern styles that produces
a well rounded three-dimensional body if stuffed properly. The usual
difficulties encountered with face painting are completely eliminated
by the use of an iron-on transfer followed by the use of colored pencils,
all of this on a pre-painted skin surface. The mohair fiber hairstyle
has two options, one a simple rolled style and the other, preferred
for its charm, is making a snood which holds all her hair with almost
no styling. Complete instructions for making either a simple netting
snood or a hand crocheted one are included. Her outfit consists of
a typical two-piece jacket and skirt of the Fashion Doll Era with the
skirt having the bustle look in back with a longer trailing skirt,
and basic undies, the whole ensemble topped off with a simple constructed
bonnet that nicely frames her face with instructions for a cloth-covered
hatbox.

MAKE YOUR OWN MOLDED DOLLS - Even if your first love
is cloth dolls, eventually there comes a fascination with molded dolls.
Papier mache has long been a favorite due to its warmth and ability
to look less hard than china or other fired pieces, although its durability
is lengendary. Many dollmakers like to work in a hand medium such as
PaperClay or even press PaperClay into press molds. But even accomplished
sculptors admit that it is very hard to start from scratch. Getting
everything in the right proportion is hard enough, but there is also
calculating so that the doll will fit a certain pattern and that is
without even considering symmetry and pleasing placement of features.
So, I have taken a very basic doll head/shoulderplate shape with corresponding
simplistic lower arms and legs and created a basic doll which can be
left as is and simply painted with painted hair, or painted but wigged
with fiber hair, PaperClay added sculpted hair which creates unlimited
possibilities, or experiment with adding finer detail in eyes, nose,
lips, and even fingers. This doll is a nice-to-sew-for 11" size
and can easily be used to make a Queen Anne, an Izannah Walker look,
a Peg Wooden or Milliner's Model, Greiner types or other genres with
highly molded hair or simply a doll from your own imagination. I have
provided body patterns and a set of basic costume pattern pieces which
will make practically any style of gown, unders, aprons, bonnets and
shoes that you can use to execute your own designs. Adding PaperClay
to molded papier mache parts is fun and easy. You can start with already
molded parts, a package of PaperClay and the instructions and patterns,
or go one step further and get a mold of your own which will provide
many castings. I am now importing the best casting material for plaster
molds that I believe is available. You can read more about what is
offered on the Supplies page about 3/4 of the way down the page. We
even offer the special hardwood sculpting tool that is so essential
when working with paper mediums and made from our own apple wood. Everything
is available separately or an introductory package to get you
started. This
includes a set of molded parts to start, a set of molds, a quart of
the casting medium Flumo, my special wooden tool, a package of PaperClay,
a set of necessary drill bits for sew holes and all patterns and instructions.
There is even a link to many photos of genres of old dolls to be inspired

Gail's Own Chap Stick & Hand Balm
Why you ask? Well, since my ordeal with colon cancer, I am on the quest for having everything possible natural and organic. We built a chicken coop, got chickens for meat and chickens to keep as egg layers. Feeding them organically and of course, they are allowed out in our yard. That is only one thing. Of course I have been buying as much organic food as possible, especially focusing on necessary fiber and vitamins, etc. One of the areas that affects my work is dryness due to New England cold and the heating season, but also excessive handling of paper, clays and plaster, plus fabrics, all of which dry your hands and lips out. One should drink plenty of liquids (lips are a first signal you are getting dehydrated), but truth be told, I have always been somewhat addicted to ChapStick brand lip balm. So, it too underwent scrutiny and it is made from petroleum products, so I first tried all manner of Burt's Bees and other all naturals, but every single one had something (mint, eucalyptus, etc.) that stings chapped lips - who thought that was a good idea, huh? Eventually, by luck found and switched to ChapStick 100% Naturals, and not liking flavors, settled on the one in this line called Botanical Medley. All was well until I gave my tube away and then could not find it anywhere, except online. But having learned that the very best skin moisturizer is olive oil along with Vitamin E and beeswax, and knowing I had all those ingredients right here and being very familiar with making wax blends, I set out to try making some. So, here is the part you need to know. Real ChapStick feels like it works better, but what it does is simply seal in your lips to prevent moisture loss, but seals out air (oxygen) and does nothing to promote the healing of the tiny fissures that are making your lips uncomfortable. So, you keep using more. More of spreading a petroleum product on your lips and thus into your mouth. End of story on ChapStick. Once I figured out proportions, I then bought actual cool little tubes and my style brown labels and so we have Gail's Chapped Lip Stick. Then I realized that I also had something else. Many years ago, one of my workers worked also delivering mail. All the mail carriers have to sort the mail first, handling lots of paper, making them prone to cracking cuticles and dry skin, so since they had been given this locally produced beeswax in a tin to use, she gave me one - come winter, I can get very deep cuts along my fingers and thumb due to dryness and the materials I work with. My little miracle tin of beeswax lasted many years but was almost gone and the label was worn off as to what was in it. I tried a slight alteration in the lip formula, and I cannot tell the difference from the old tin I have used up. This recipe also has unrefined shea butter from Africa which besides incredible moisturizing and healing qualities has natural sun blocks. Now beeswax is not something that soaks in quickly, so the trick is to apply liberally when you are say going to bed or maybe talking on the phone. It needs a few minutes so it doesn't get on other things you might be handling. Also good on any dried out area like heels, elbows. So, there you have it.
