|
![]() Tiny Hittys dressed and undressed. |
I have been making my version of the beloved
6-1/2" Hitty for about three years. For Christmas '06, I added a tiny
3" Hitty to my historical doll ornament collection and of course allow
for any of the dolls to be ordered with or without a hanging loop
so that they are free to be just small dolls. Little Hitty turned out
to be as popular as just about any doll I have ever made and it took
several months to complete all the orders that came in as a result of
Christmastime orders. Of course, Hitty being Hitty, big or small, she
just begs to have her things. The tiny Hitty comes with patterns to make
a simple outfit (including undies), or now you can order separate clothes
for her. Tiny Hitty is also Number 3 in the Historical Doll Ornament Series. Go to the Christmas page to see the other two dolls. |

![]() The Inspiration for the new Fashion Type Dolls |
This past year I rekindled a love for oil painting which is appropriate for painted historical dolls. I began with the 14" Fashion Doll below which will be coming out soon in kit form (kit will have all the makings except the oil paints themselves (because they dry out in kits kept for long periods), but these can be purchased separately from my Supplies section in small quantities. This first doll was the subject of one of my doll retreats and the popularity of oil paint as a medium was immediately evident. I liked working with oils for doll faces so much, I just had to modify the Fashion Doll's pattern for a more child-like body and do the Emma edition below as well. 12" All-Cloth Fashion
Doll in Two-Piece Outfit with Bonnet and Hatbox ~ This doll
has a great very shaped body a painted face, arms and legs with a mohair
wig. She comes with the two piece outfit plus her underthings, constructed
bonnet, its hatbox. Finished dolls also come with a wooden stand.

NOTE:
This doll (above photo) was previously called the Fashion Doll, a name
some students gave her while in class making her. Although I love this
doll, it never sat right with me to have called her the Fashion Doll,
so it became increasingly difficult to know exactly what to do with
her. Her face and painting was more Early American and indeed, she
became the basis of Emma (see below) who was much better suited. I
knew I wanted to do an online class of a Fashion Doll, but this doll
was not "right".
So, my solution was to make this doll her own kit which and
then the floodgates opened to the Real Fashion Doll who will become an
entire series of kits and patterns of my version of a more traditional
doll of the period associated with this genre of dolls (the late 1800's).
There will be an online class for the new doll who will have real mohair
hair and wonderful costumes and accessories from Civil War times (picture
Little Women) and a bit beyond. The scale of the new doll will be a better
12" size that allows for detail without being too large. There is
a great deal of interest in this type of doll, moreso than possibly all
but Hitty, and I promise you that this will be one of my best series
yet. The doll series will be available as kits and patterns, finished
dolls, a club for both of these presentations, and, of course, the much
awaited online class. All of this is projected to begin this fall. There
will be an announcement when the items are ready to be ordered and notification
of the online class will be addressed to all who signed up for the Fashion
Doll Online Class and on my Classes page which you can click on in the
menu at left. |

![]() 14" Oil Painted Charlotte |
CHARLOTTE ~ Another 14" Oil Painted Cloth Doll. Next to my Disney doll, I would have to say that when out in public with all my other dolls, Charlotte steals the most hearts. She begins with a traditional pattern style called "the baseball head" (due to the construction being similar to how a baseball cover is sewn). This style creates one of the best true-to-human head shapes there is using cloth and just a couple of pattern pieces. Charlotte comes with her bonnet, simple farmgirl dress, undies trimmed with handmade lace , stockings, and leather shoes. She is completely stuffed with real wool and has a nice weight to hold in your hand. Finished Charlottes:
First Edition of 12 $495. Add

KATE GREENAWAY BOY AND GIRL ~ This will make a pair of 10" painted cloth child dolls in a newly worked pattern of a style I am coming to think of as one of the best for a fairly uncomplicated cloth doll with a fully three-dimensional look. Faces are to be outlined with iron-on transfers and hair is a series of templates and brush technique. Painting is a combination of acrylics and fast drying oils. The charm of this pair of dolls comes from their small size, the added interest of a boy and girl pair and of course the wonderful clothing taken entirely from Kate Greenaway illustrations of the late 1800's. This is a doll you will want to make over and over. Pattern

THE FEEDSACK SERIES This
pattern will make a 14" Doll with Red Shoes and 14" Black
Sister. The charm of these dolls made like my Feedsack Doll is the
ease of doing their faces with colored pencils. Every student who has
made these in my classes easily turned out a great doll. Even the stuffing
is easier due to the style of head. Pattern comes with several iron-on
faces that you fill in with colored pencils. (A complete set of colored
pencils is available on the Supplies page). |
![]() 9" Hannah and Her Izannah |

head though she is made of painted cloth just like her 9" owner.
Hannah and Izannah have handmade lace trim and come on a wooden stand.
If I could make just one cloth doll, Hannah would be it.
She is so nice in your hand. If you click to buy a 20% deposit will

CHAIRS ~ During my Joel Ellis (Springfield Wooden) online doll class, it came to my attention that one of my favorite doll chairs was not on my website. No wonder they sold well at shows but the website turned up no orders. You can find this chair at the bottom of the Historical & Primitive Dolls page. It is called the Mustard Chair and it happens to be just right for 12" dolls like the Springfield Woodens and it has a woven splint seat with nice turnings and arms. Also in the same area, you will find a bench (for 2 dolls) and a wooden pouting chair which will serve for lots of dolls up to 14". $110 Add
