 A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HITTY Hitty is a small wooden doll, about 6-1/2", who presently lives in the Stockbridge Library, Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She is believed to have been about 100 years old when she was found in an antique shop by Rachel Field and Dorothy Lathrop in about 1929. Rachel and Dorothy wrote and illustrated (respectively) such a charming story of the way they imagined Hitty's life, that not only did the book, Hitty ~ Her First Hundred Years, win the Newbery Medal for children's literature (1929), but Hitty became beloved by all from that time to this. The book has been republished many times (it is still available and I highly recommend it) and there has developed an enormous following for Hitty and all of her things. Many people make Hittys, most of wood, some of cloth, some porcelain. I chose papier mache to be in keeping with her sculpted look (especially her hair), but I wanted to make a kit of Hitty, so it seemed ideal to draw upon my many years of mold making, and make a doll that not only was my Hitty, but one that others could make too and still be recognized for who she is. There have been two online classes for Hitty that drew students from 9 countries and totaled 175 students. Many people made more than one Hitty. Her First Hundred Years (paperback version) by Rachel Field

you don't own a copy of this beloved book originally published
in 1929, here is an inexpensive paperback version. Of
course, Hitty lovers may want to look on used book sites for
an older hard bound version, but here is a suitable printing
that allows you to own the story complete with black and white
reproduction of the original illustrations by Dorothy Lathrop.

THE HITTY SERIES ~ The first Hitty doll is ready in both kit form and finished dolls. Work began in January 2005 of some of the many items that will be part of this series. There will be other clothes, hats and bonnets, a four-poster bed and quilt, a chair, a secretary, her memoirs and other small books, a sampler, a rug, a bench, travel boxes, a wardrobe and even other sized Hitty dolls. The size of Hitty and how she feels in your hand will win your heart.Finished Hittys in this first edition come as pictured above with the embroidered "Hitty" pinafore and her real coral necklace (shown below) and an optional small Hitty Book shown in the picture at top.The Hitty Kit comes with the molded head, hands and feet and all materials to make the papier-mache and cloth doll, including wool stuffing, all paints, her coral beads, fabrics and notions for her simple dress (shown in top photo sitting on floor), and underwear. Fine lace is also included, but so are the instructions for making your own simple lace using only a needle and sewing thread. (Hitty must have all the details). Extra molded parts are available to make more Hittys if you have a kit. |

~ The finished 6-1/2" Hitty doll (these are all individually made
by GW) may be ordered in several options. All underwear is trimmed in
handmade lace (by GW). Hitty's Simple Dresses are made in the style of
one of Hitty's historic brown dresses and dresses that are under the pinafore
are a different style with set-in waist and handmade lace trim. All finished
Hittys come signed and dated and with her coral beads. |

The real Hitty had a "bookcase" house in Rachel Field's
time. This one will be similar and designed and made in the style
of my shadowboxes. It will hold all of Hitty's things that I am including
in her series. The house will be offered two ways - all painted,
wallpapered with interior lighting and removable glass front and
lid. 24" wide
x 14" tall x 12" deep.

?Here are some of the projected items: More Hitty outfits inspired
by the illustrations by Dorothy Lathrop, Hitty's punch needle whale
rug (easy to do even if you never have), Hitty's punch needle foot
stool, Hitty's table, A Wardrobe, Hitty's Folding Screen and more,
including a new Hitty doll and her Companion. Continuing On for finished
things will also be a club, but it will not start up until late
2008. These clubs will only have new items 6 times per year, although
it may not happen exactly every other month, though that is the plan
to shoot for. In the box below, the next projected item will be
posted and when it can be expected. This will allow you to stay
in tune.
